Organised by a group of volunteers from lím collective
8 Sessions on Wednesdays from 20.00-21.30
This study group is an intensive 8-week peer led online self-study on whiteness, privilege and supremacy. We will read Layla F. Saad’s book “Me And White Supremacy” and follow the learning framework set out by the book. The group is open to white folks who wants to learn about their own white supremacy, the ways it is often (unconsciously) practiced in everyday life, and how to make steps towards changing these patterns. This is a constructive learning space for you to work on your emotional resilience in relation to questions of race, practice listening and holding space.
Saad’s book is one of many resources that can serve as a good introduction to working on your white supremacy through the lens of everyday life. It contains a 28-day challenge on “me and white supremacy” with daily exercises to complete Over the course of 8 weeks, we will select topics and homework from the book to come together to listen, reflect and share learning once a week for 90 minutes online.
FOR WHO? The study group is designed to be a peer-to-peer learning space for white people to work on changing racially biased thoughts, practices, ideas, and behaviours. It is based on the understanding that - as white people - we all have internalized racial bias and the privileges of white supremacy are an integral part of how our everyday life functions. The only requirement is that you genuinely want and are ready to look at your own whiteness, privilege and supremacy, and are interested in the sometimes uncomfortable but important process of learning to recognize and tackle it. We will support each other in this process.
We encourage you to join the group with a friend or two, a family member or group of colleagues if that is an option, because much of the process is about building a new language to understand your own whiteness, how and when you use it, as well as training your emotional resilience. It is very helpful to develop this practice with people in your life. But joining by yourself is also totally ok - and you will meet new white peers willing to work on this topic together.
THE STUDY SESSIONS
The group and the sessions are all collectively organized and based on the books suggested facilitation method The Circle Way. For our online format, that means that we commit to having rotating session hosts, script-reader, time-keepers, accountability guides, and after-care for each session. People volunteer at the end of each session, that is 1 week ahead for the tasks. For the introduction, a group of existing volunteers have organized the first session.
TIME Each sessions is 1.5 hours
Rotating Roles
Host ~ opens and closes the space based on a prewritten script
Facilitator ~ plans the session including exercise, breakout rooms and timekeeping.
Guardian ~ a person who will volunteer to help accountability in conversations and will prepare constructive questions to help accountability.
After-care ~ a person who stays behind for 30 min for anyone who wants/needs to linger.
*literature can be accessed on the writers website here, on the Danish Saxo site - or borrowed at your local library.
