The placement De 8 timers søvn der tager 12 timer is a artwork for the NICU exploring the experiential and body worlds evolving from reproductive health, with a particular focus on families whose children have been in the NICU. Life as parents in a neonatal unit requires additional labour, hence the title, which points to the four hours of extra work it takes for a parent in a NICU to sleep eight hours. With a focus on the parents' own resources and self-care, Sara Hagins creates a peer-to-peer forum to pass on knowledge from parents who have experience from NICU in a series of creative workshops.
Knowledge, thoughts, hope and advice from the workshops will be included in the final artwork for the NICU Aalborg (DK), where parental knowledge can be passed on to other families who will be at the ward with their children in the future. Hagins uses text, embroidery and drawing as an entry point to process the emotional imprints that difficult births can leave on families.
Sara Hagins collaborates with the neonatal department at Aalborg Hospital, maternity services, and health activist Toyin Adeyinka.

The workshops are free to attend and open to all parents who have experience of having children whose lives began in the neonatal unit. No prior artistic knowledge is required to participate. Registration must be done via email to info.limcollective@gmail.com. Please write "LAP booking" in the subject line. Please include in the email, the date of the workshop that you wish to participate in as well as a brief description of yourself and why you want to participate.
Sara Hagins is a visual artist, parent and educator who works with playing with balances of power between, for example, heavy/light objects, children/adults, living/dead by swapping relationships, erasing or drawing new boundaries. Hagins has more than 10 years of experience with incorporating natural systems and ecologies into her artistic and educational practice. She holds a degree from the art school Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual in Lisbon, Portugal.

‘De 8 timers søvn der tager 12 timer’ er et værk til neonatalafdelingen som udforkser kropslige verdener omkring reproduktiv sundhed med særligt fokus på familier, der har haft ophold på neonatalafsnit. Livet som forældre på neonatal kræver en ekstra arbejdsbyrde, deraf titlen, der peger på de fire timers ekstra arbejde, det tager for en forælder på neonatal at sove otte timer. Med fokus på forældrenes egne ressourcer og selvomsorg, skaber Sara Hagins et forum for at overlevere viden fra forældre der har erfaringer fra neonatalafdelingen i en række kreative workshops.
Viden, tanker, håb, og råd fra workshoppene kommer til at indgå i det endelige kunstværk til neonatalafdelingen i Aalborg, hvor forældre-viden kan blive videreformidlet til andre familier med tidligt fødte børn. Hagins bruger tekst, broderi og tegning, som indgang til at bearbejde følelsesmæssige aftryk, som svære fødselsforløb kan sætte i familier.

Workshoppene er gratis at deltage i og åbent for alle forældre, som har erfaringer med at have børn, hvis liv startede på neonatalafsnit. Det kræver ingen kunstnerisk forhåndsviden at deltage. Sara Hagins er billedkunstner, forælder og underviser, som arbejder med at lege med magtbalancer imellem f.eks tunge/lette objekter, børn/voksne, levende/dødt ved at bytte om på relationer, udviske eller optegne nye grænser. Hagins har mere end 10 års erfaring med at indarbejde natursystemer og økologier i hendes kunstneriske og didaktiske praksis. Hun er uddannet fra kunstskolen Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual i Lissabon, Portugal.
